The Whip – Divebomb
The Whip – Divebomb (Kitsune Records)
July 2nd, 2007
5.1/6.0
Judging The Whip purely by this release, you could be forgiven for thinking they are the delinquent ASBO babies of an illicit Josh Wink and Chemical Brothers one-night stand. Making the kind of music that, thankfully, does not feature screeching female faux-euphoria, or a man with a whistle demanding that we put our hands up for some irrelevant foreign city, The Whip let their intuitive command of acid-bleeps and dirty synth do the talking in this behemoth of a dance crossover tune. Sorry, my mistake; I meant “chooooon!”
Divebomb has taken the principles of grimy underground rock music and turned them into primeval electronic phrases, with lyrics discarded in favour of sheer bangin’ness. I for one am not ashamed to be seen publicly waving my glowsticks for The Whip.
