TV On The Radio – Crying

TV On The Radio - Crying (4AD)
May 25th, 2009
4.5/6.0

Released as a download only single prior to their sold out Brixton Academy show and must see slot at T in the Park, Crying seeing the New Yorkers turn up the heat for this soulful offering.

Sounding like a slice of classic Prince from his purple reigning heyday, Crying sees Kyp Malone take over the vocal duties from the usual lead, the multi-talented Tunde Adebimpe.

Lifted from the almost impossibly good album Dear Science, which was named album of 2008 by pretty much every magazine and newspaper roundup last year, this track comes coated in velvet gold and is typical of the band’s latest LP.  TV On The Radio plan to showcase their piece de resistance at the festivals this summer (having not had the chance to bring it to the European outdoors to date), and Crying is a typically brilliant sample of that work.

On a long player full of potential singles and loaded with killer tracks this may seem like an odd choice to release, as Dancing Choose it is not. But if this more chilled out groover garners the underrated band just a little bit more of the attention they surely deserve yet seem loathe to accept, then its release will be more than worthwhile.
