Fight Like Apes – Tie Me Up With Jackets (Model Citizen)
January 19th, 2009
5.4/6.0
I don’t know about you, but I reckon that hearing something on the radio and feeling you simply have to find out who’s making that lovely noise is actually fairly life affirming. And yes, that may be an exaggeration but it is at least one that I whole-heartedly endorse.
This lovely noise is Fight Like Apes, and it took three listens before I caught their name. In that time, Tie Me Up With Jackets had left me insatiable.
They’re from the same school of clever noise-pop as Los Campesinos!, and they sound like the band I always wanted Metric to be. Right from the off you’ve got guitars with just the right amount of feedback, covered in squelchy synth and computer beeps that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Super Furries record.
Lyrically it’s half nonsense (chorus included), half music geek wit: “# you say Yo La Tengo like you’re selling perfume #” squeals frontwoman MayKay, and in that moment Fight Like Apes are the coolest band of 2009.
