Mystery Jets - Radlands (Rough Trade Records)
April 30, 2012
4.5/6.0
Mystery Jets are still alive and kicking, and their sound continues to evolve.
Big Deal - Lights Out
September 5th, 2011
4.5/6.0
For a debut, this is remarkably accomplished and a joy to listen to.
Delta Maid – Outside Looking In (Geffen/Future Records)
May 9, 2011
4.5/6.0
Sounding more like she hails from the West Coast of the USA than of the UK, Delta's debut longplayer Outside Looking In is a convincing if not exactly groundbreaking collection of country-tinged tunes.
Guillemots – Walk The River (Universal Music/Geffen)
April 18th, 2011
4.5/6.0
On Walk The River... it's clear that the band have achieved a better balance between the commercial and the experimental.
Little Comets - Isles (Dirty Hit)
October 18th, 2010
4.5/6.0
Little Comets have intellect, energy and snappy songs aplenty, and Isles is no exception.
The National - Anyone’s Ghost (4AD)
June 28th, 2010
4.5/6.0
With the aid of sparse acoustic guitar and delay pedal, The National have crafted a claustrophobic affair perfectly fitting the bleak imagery about the afterlife of a relationship and the recession into non-existence.
iLIKETRAINS - Sea Of Regrets (Beggars Banquet) October 12th, 2009 4.5/6.0 I Like Trains return with an offering that once again will please those who...
The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Higher Than The Stars EP (Fortuna POP!)
November 9th, 2009
4.8/6.0
Aside from the nods to MBV and The Smiths that have already been pointed out countless times, Come Saturday takes a more recent reference point – the pop sensibilities of Ash, especially with the high-speed basslines and vocal delivery of Kip Berman.
Zero 7 - Yeah Ghost (Atlantic Records)
September 28th, 2009
4.5/6.0
There is something of a passing of the baton to fresh talent on Yeah Ghost, with a first glimpse of Eska Mtungwazi’s soulful deep, yet feminine voice on Mr McGee. Its quick-step 50s jive is fused with post When It Falls trip-hop sensibilities.
Overall, this is a promising debut album. Packed full of electronic beeps and squiggles, it’s clear Sparks was influenced by the decade of his birth.
